TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related -- from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination. Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that's a neat feature, it's also a bit of a downer -- because, really, it's about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn't already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn't work with WP7 at the moment). While it's nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it'd be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger. Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you're frequently on the go -- at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update. But physical media devotees needn't worry too much -- the company quietly announced at launch that the latest version of OS X will also be available on a USB key, for the lofty price of $69 -- which, incidentally, still requires Snow Leopard, unlike what has been previously reported. Word hit today that the company has finally issued the flash drive version of the software, information gleaned from an internal document reportedly leaked by AppleCare. We have it on good authority, however, that the drives mentioned in the document are not, in fact, the aforementioned sticks. Rather, the "recovery media" discussed is actually a restoration tool for AppleCare employees, used to fix faulty systems. We hate to be the burster of bubbles, but it seems that the App Store-impaired will still have to wait until later this month to get their hands on the $70 Apple dongle. It was intended as an April Fools' joke, but it was so well-recieved that Ion Audio decided to make it into a real product. We normally don't cover a lot of gaming stuff here on GeekTech, but when we got an iCade in the office, we couldn't resist. So in honor GeekTech's Retro Week, here's what we thought of this throwback gadget. Before playtime starts, you'll have a little work to do. Much like products you'd purchase from Ikea, the iCade needs to be assembled first. Assembly wasn't too difficult--you're basically just sticking the parts together--but we managed to put the top cover on upside down. Oops. Some assembly required. Once you have it all assembled, it's time to set up your iPad to work with it. The iCade connects to your iPad via Bluetooth, so in essence it's treated as a Bluetooth keyboard. This came as a bit of a surprise to us--we expected it to connect via a Dock connector--and it works a little wonky. When you pair the iCade with your iPad, you have to punch in a PIN on the iCade, but since there are no number keys, the various arcade controls translate to different numerical values. It took us a few tries to punch in the right combination, but we eventually got it to pair. For now, only one official app works with the iCade--Atari's Greatest Hits for iPad. Through this app, you can download and play dozens of classic Atari games, but only one game--Mission Command--comes for free. You can purchase the full 99-game pack using the in-app purchasing feature for $15, and you can buy various game 4-packs for 99 cents each. (If you've jailbroken your iPad you have one other option--iMAME4All--but it may require you to do a little tinkering to get it to work.) Once you're all set up, it's time to play! We played Mission Command and Pong using the iCade in our hands-on time. The controls take some getting used to: They feel imprecise, especially for someone who's accustomed to playing games on an iPad. I couldn't play Mission Command to save my life with the arcade controls--I was moving all over the place and couldn't hit my targets effectively. I imagine I'd get used to it if I had more time to play with it, though. The iCade is designed for using the iPad in portrait mode; its limitations become more apparent when you play a game (like Pong) in landscape mode. While we managed to play Pong with the iCade (and it did a decent job, all things considered, for a one-player game), we had to take the iPad out of the the iCade's cradle, otherwise it wouldn't fit. VIDEO: The iCade, an Arcade Cabinet for Your iPad Oh, and since the iPad sees the iCade as a Bluetooth keyboard, you have to actually disable Bluetooth on your iPad if you switch to another app and have to enter text; otherwise, the onscreen keyboard won't appear. At the moment, the iCade is little more than a novelty. It's a clever idea, but given it costs $99 and only works with one app, it isn't a must-have, even for hard-core gamers. If more developers get on board and write apps that can support the iCade, though, it might be worth your consideration. For more on the iCade, see Patrick Miller's take in our slideshow, The Treasures of Skymall Tested, and Alex Wawro's video walkthrough. But if there's any doubts that its camera is still the gold-medal champion of the bunch, "Gulp" will shut up the critics. The video you see below is the world's largest stop-motion movie, filmed on a beach in South Wales using none other than the phone's famed 12 megapixel sensor. Okay, that's not entirely true; it was actually done on three of them, not just one, with the aid of a massively tall crane to lift them up. Everything you see in the flick -- including the fisherman and his boat -- is life-size; the largest scene spans over 11,000 square feet. The Sumo Science production, in all of its 90-second glory, is ready for your viewing pleasure below, as is a short documentary explaining how it all went down. For sure, you're either going to lust after a N8 once again, or vow never to go fishing again. Well friends, the time is coming soon for the Find My Mac feature to provide a highly sought after sigh of relief, Find My iPhone-style. Apple has released the software into the wild for registered iOS devs, with the only other requirements being OS X Lion and an iCloud subscription. Using WiFi networks to locate your missing appendage via a web browser or iOS device, the location tool offers you a number of anti-theft options -- send a threatening message, lock down the machine remotely, or even wipe the machine's drive clean. Perhaps we will see this security detail launch with iCloud in fall, which was also released in beta form earlier this week.
